The Nagae family has long been named Soukichi. In 1801, the third generation Soukichi established new Setoyaki (caledon ceramics), and researched methods of producing more exquisite clay with Kato Tamikichi and Kato Tozaemon, who were known as “Merciful Masters”. He was also appointed by Owari Domain to guard the Chikura stone. In 1872, the feudal han system was being abolished while modern prefectures were being introduced throughout Japan. The fifth generation Soukichi established his own kiln named Su Shan Kiln. Later generations inherited the name of Nagae Soukichi and Su Shan Kiln. The current kiln is managed by the ninth generation of the family.
