DETAIL
Konoha Tenmoku is a unique technique that melts natural leaves into the glaze. Even after being
fired at extremely high temperature, the leaf is not fired to ashes but instead its veins are
vivid displayed, showing a realistic and elegant silhouette, just like real leaves, floating in the
ocean of glaze. This graceful collection of works is an ingenious workmanship.
After a month-long vacation in Provence, France in 2013, I was so enchanted and inspired by
the beauty of the lavender fields there, that I decided to formulate a unique glaze that could
capture this amazing scene.
The difficulties in creating the “lavender” glaze are tremendous. For example, what colorant
should I use to trigger the vibrant colors that reflect the different stages of lavender blossoms?
How big should the lavender petals be? How do I arrange the colors so the presentation is picturesque?
Additionally, it took many trial and errors to find the ideal temperature curves.
I’m happy to present the satisfying results - three Chawans that provoke three types of imagination
about the beautiful lavender fields in Provence.
