In Cha Dao, we strive to become as natural a part of the Leaf’s journey from tree to bowl as the rain or the sun. Watching a bud sprout naturally and effortlessly from a branch, we learn about the way our movements are motivated by what is next to the hand (shou qian, 手前) in this present moment, not as an abstract form, but as the body becoming tea, just as tea becomes the body after we drink it. In this way, our ceremonial form flows, becoming the kettle, the pour and then the liquor as it travels through body and spirit. In this course we will learn some of the foundational principles of a ceremonial form and a basic form that we can practice toward mindfulness and to gather intention to offer to our guests as a part of heartfelt hospitality, which includes an opportunity to awaken.
