Chian Yu-Ting has dedicated himself to the tenmoku chawan since 1984. He went from not knowing anything about tenmoku, to creating tenmoku, to finally altering tenmoku. In 1995, with the power of fire, he discovered the multicolored tenmoku. The multicolored tenmoku is fired a single layer of iron oxide glaze. The colors that develop include red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, purple, silver, and multi-colored. The color and patterns can transform in a million ways with the intensity and angle of the light, as if performing a heavenly dance hidden in the world of the bowl. It was thusly given the name Hidden-Colored Tenmoku.
Chiang characterizes his ceramic craft as the "Art of Firing". It's an art of energy conversion, an art of "do nothing."
