The chawan is the vessel which first drew me to pottery. It seems that making chawan is a fundamental part of creating ceramics. For years I would try pinching or sculpting human bodies and would always eventually return to creating chawans. The marks left in the clay from pinching the chawan by hand is a record of my deepest feelings at the time. Drinking water or tea with the chawan allows me to feel the memories and emotions of the years of learning ceramics. The Chawan is an origin and a medium. Making or using the chawan would initiate interaction and communication between the man and the chawan.
