Shi Chi-Yao's feldspar glaze originated from the shino glaze and has since been developing his own glaze to this day. From the organic rice straws of Wufeng, to the plant ash (longan, lychee, and pineapples) from the mountains of Puli, Shi has his students burn the plants before washing, grinding, and producing the natural plant ash himself. The "Genyou" series is his signature plant ash glaze. Shi worked to tweak the recipe and firing method to yield pieces with different colors and textures, e.g. the Golden Genyou, Blue Genyou, White Genyou, and Black Genyou. The "Falling Leaves; Falling Rain" glaze is a mineral glaze formed from the jade of Hualien and Taitung and the colors it displays covers the spectrum of the rainbow. When fired with other minerals (such as rhodonite), pieces with entirely different styles can be obtained. Shi's work cover a wide range of ceramics. Aside from the colorful variation of natural glazes, he also works on lifestyle ceramics, tea ceramics, artistic shapes, and ceramic printing, all part of his attempt to explore the possibilities of different types of ceramics with different mindsets.
